91Թ concluded its 11-year Conquer the Trail Race tradition Saturday, April 18, 2026, with a record 121 runners raising funds to combat food insecurity in celebration of the university's 75th anniversary.

The race, presented by Conquer The World Endurance and Mercy's Exercise Science Program, generated $2,165 for the Mav Market, the university's free food pantry serving students and community members.

Organizers designed the commemorative 7.5-kilometer course to honor Mercy's 75th anniversary, featuring a flat, out-and-back route along the Croton Aqueduct Trail.

"This race represents everything Mercy stands for," said Amanda Bireline, associate professor of health and exercise science. "For 75 years, we've believed in removing barriers to success."

Bireline said the anniversary distance resonated with participants, contributing to the highest turnout in the race's history.

Jordan Wolff won the men's division while Ralitsa Delgado took the women's title. Two Mercy students placed among the top three women finishers: nursing major Gabrielle Martin and health science major Caitlin Leary.

Top Finishers Overall Male

Jordan Wolff 29:25

Robert Gorman 31:36

Mark Paparo 31:48

Top Finishers Female

Ralitsa Delgado 33:37

Gabrielle Martin 34:21

Caitlin Leary 34:48

The race brough the Mercy community together, from alumni, including race director Steven Estremera, to Mercy faculty, staff and students, who were involved in planning, promoting and helping out throughout the race. The event also drew support from local sponsors including Gourmet Dining, Spear PT, New York Sports Club Dobbs Ferry and Wegmans.

All proceeds benefit the Mav Market, which provides nutritious food and personal care items at no cost to Mercy community members experiencing food insecurity.

Watch video highlights

As the University continues to commemorate its 75th Anniversary throughout the academic year, this special 7.5K race embodies the institution's commitment to community, service, and supporting those in need.

91Թ invites the community to lace up their running shoes for a meaningful cause as the institution celebrates its 75th anniversary. Presented by Conquer The World Endurance and 91Թ’s Exercise Science Program, the 11th and final edition of the Conquer the Trail Race will take place on Saturday, April 18, 2026, marking both the conclusion of a beloved tradition and a tribute to Mercy's 75 years of transforming lives through education. All proceeds from the race will benefit Mercy's Mav Market, a judgment-free, inclusive and confidential resource that provides nutritious food and personal care items at no cost to anyone in the Mercy community experiencing food insecurity.

“This race represents everything Mercy stands for," said Amanda Bireline, associate professor of Health and Exercise Science at 91Թ. "For 75 years, we've believed in removing barriers to success. The Conquer the Trail Race continues that tradition by bringing our community together to support students facing food insecurity—ensuring they can focus on their education, not their next meal."

Throughout the 2025-2026 academic year, 91Թ has hosted a series of special events designed to bring together students, faculty, staff, alumni, and surrounding communities. The Conquer the Trail Race represents the University's belief that education extends beyond the classroom and that community partnerships create lasting impact.

The commemorative 7.5K run will feature a flat, fast out-and-back course along the scenic Croton Aqueduct Trail, with the distance specially chosen to honor the University's 75th anniversary.

Awards will be presented to the top three overall male and female finishers, and race day raffles will feature prizes from community sponsors. Participants should note that while the course is flat, it runs primarily on natural trail terrain including rocks, stumps, and tree roots.

Registration remains open through race day. Community members can register online at https://mercy.edu/news-events/events/conquer-trail-7.5k or in person on April 18. The first 75 runners who register will receive a limited-edition 75th Anniversary t-shirt and 7.5% off registration with code: ConquerMercy75. Race day registration ends promptly at 8:45 AM so the event can start on time. Participants should plan to arrive early. The race starts at 9:00 AM sharp.

Join 91Թ in celebrating 75 years of community impact while supporting students in need. Every registration makes a difference.

                                                                         ###

About 91Թ

91Թ is an independent, coeducational institution serving more than 9,000 students each year across campuses in Westchester, the Bronx, Manhattan, as well as online.

Students from 91Թ earned multiple top awards at this year’s Metropolitan Association of College and University Biologists (MACUB) Conference, a respected regional gathering that promotes undergraduate research and collaboration in the biological sciences. Their achievements highlight both the strength of Mercy’s academic programs and the university’s sustained commitment to mentoring the next generation of scientists and educators.

Nearly 30 biology majors presented research spanning neuroscience, developmental biology, molecular plant biology, microbiology and biochemistry. Participation in MACUB offered students valuable professional exposure, provided opportunities to communicate their scientific findings and allowed them to engage with peers and faculty across the tri-state area.

This year’s 91Թ award winners include:

1st Place, Neuroscience and Physiology category

Students: Chidinma Echezona and Ashley Onofre

Faculty Mentor: Renée Haskew-Layton, PhD

Research Project: “Astrocytes release the antioxidant glutathione via volume-regulated anion channels”

1st Place, Developmental Biology and Genetics category

Student: Annelle Veronika Mpoungui Mpambou

Faculty Mentor: Chun Zhou, PhD

Research Project: “Protein expression and purification of the mutated versions of the Bgl B enzyme”

3rd Place, Microbiology and Immunology category

Students: Bianca De La Cruz, Nawal Haroon, Abraham Haseq (WCC student through grant partnership)

Faculty Mentor: Devdutta Deb

Research Project: “A closer look at Oomycete Effector Protein RxL10 and its impact on Solanum lycopersicum (tomato) and Glycine max (soybean) plants”

Dr. Renée Haskew-Layton, associate dean of the School of Health and Natural Sciences, praised the students’ dedication and the depth of their preparation.

“To prepare, our students synthesized the scientific background related to their projects, analyzed data, interpreted results, and mapped out future directions in a scientific poster format,” she said. “Conferences like MACUB allow students to connect theory to practice and to learn from undergraduate peers at nearby institutions. Presenting to audiences outside of 91Թ brings a strong sense of accomplishment and highlights that they are conducting authentic scientific research.”

91Թ President Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., celebrated the students’ success, adding, “I’m so grateful to the faculty for creating these exceptional experiences for our students.”

Provost Kristin Curry Greenwood, PT, DPT, Ed.D., M.S., FNAP, echoed the sentiment: “Excellent achievements of students and faculty mentors!”

For the student winners, the recognition marks both an academic milestone and a validation of their hard work.

Chidinma Echezona, a first-place winner in Neuroscience and Physiology, reflected on the experience:
“Participating in this conference for a second time was both exciting and nerve-wracking. Working with my brilliant partner, Ashley, and our wonderful mentor made the experience incredibly fulfilling. Winning first place was surreal and amazing—it solidified our sense of accomplishment and made all the long hours worth it.”

She also expressed deep appreciation for her mentor. “Working with Dr. Haskew-Layton. was a huge honor. Her experience and guidance made the entire process worthwhile. My love for research has only grown because of her mentorship.”

Her project partner, Ashley Onofre, shared similar feelings:
“Winning first place was an incredibly emotional moment. We worked so hard—both on the science and on learning how to communicate it clearly. It felt like everything came together when we presented to the judges. Working with Dr. Renée Haskew-Layton was a huge honor; her support and expertise made a tremendous difference.”

91Թ’s award-winning students, alongside dedicated faculty mentors, continue to strengthen a thriving culture of scientific inquiry—one that prepares students not only for future research careers but also for meaningful contributions to the broader scientific community.

91Թ and the Westchester County Association (WCA), both celebrating their 75th anniversaries this year, co-hosted the inaugural World of Health Care Day on Friday, October 24, at the Mercy Hall Rotunda on the Westchester campus. Building on the success of last year’s World of Finance Day, the two longtime partners came together for a half-day symposium exploring the future of health care and career pathways in this rapidly evolving field.

The event was presented by Mercy’s School of Health and Natural Sciences, led by Nannette Hyland, interim dean and professor, and WCA's Director of Workforce Development, Jason Chapin. Together, they invited students to explore new health care fields and connect directly with three panels of local industry professionals.

“There's more going on in health care than just about any other sector these days,” said Chapin in his opening remarks. “So this is a fantastic opportunity for students to learn from experts about different careers and career paths into health care.”

Exploring the Future of Health Care

The day featured three moderated panels with professionals representing hospitals, rehabilitation centers and health systems.

The first panel, “The Future of Health Care,” was moderated by Ashley O’Rourke, director of the Speech Language Pathology Program at Mercy and featured the following panelists: Michael R. Latchmansingh and Jocelyn Chacko of White Plains Hospital and Marc Leitner of the New York Blood Center. The guests discussed how artificial intelligence (A)I, telehealth and technology are reshaping both care delivery and career skills.

“Electronic health records [EHRs] have transformed how we understand patients,” said Latchmansingh, drawing a parallel between the evolution of EHRs and the rise of AI. And while health fields tend to adopt technology more cautiously “for good reason, because people’s lives are at stake,” he noted that AI is still having an impact on the day-to-day. “AI can now take care of low-risk tasks so providers can spend more face-to-face time with patients,” he said. “Every hospital wants to go fully digital, and students who understand that technology will stand out.”

Chacko echoed the value of adaptability: “Your career won’t always follow a straight path. Seek opportunity and seek ways to grow. That’s how innovation happens.”

Finding Pathways and Building Skills

Jennifer Fernandes, program director of the Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) Program at Mercy, led the second panel of the day, “What Are the Different Career Paths You Can Take?” Katie Martinez of White Plains Hospital, Brian Scheets of Blythedale Children’s Hospital and Brendan Dunn of Northwell Health each shared personal experiences from their own careers as well as practical advice for students looking to pursue similar paths.

“Don’t be afraid to talk to people above you or take on new challenges," said Martinez. “Many new opportunities come from someone tapping you on the shoulder and saying, ‘I think you’d be great for this.’”

Scheets added, “Your dream job today might not be your dream job tomorrow. Try new things. Do some introspection, and you’ll end up where you want to be.”

The third and final panel, “Essential Skills for a Successful Career,” led by Jean Walsh, Mercy’s director of Health Science Programs, included Yesenia Suarez from Westchester Medical Center, Moriah Bass from Burke Rehabilitation, Kareem Graham from White Plains Hospital and Robert Ramirez and Gus Salcedo, both from Summit Health. The panelists emphasized flexibility, communication, empathy and reliability as key differentiators in their hiring practices.

“Active listening goes a long way,” said Salcedo. “It sometimes falls by the wayside, being able to listen not just to respond but to really understand the other person, is very important.”

Bass agreed, noting that empathy is at the heart of effective care. “Especially in health care, where people are coming to you at very sensitive points in their lives, communication and empathy are critically important.”

“Empathy is a strong skill to have and something we look for all the time,” added Suarez.

Events like World of Health Care Day reflect 91Թ’s commitment to preparing the next generation of health care professionals and the value of partnerships with organizations like the WCA, whose Workforce Development initiatives connect students with career pipelines across the region.

Learn more about 91Թ’s 75th anniversary celebrations at mercy.edu/75.

The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) has awarded Dr. Matthew Hyland, associate professor of physical therapy at 91Թ, its most prestigious recognition, the Catherine Worthingham Fellowship. This honor, considered the association’s highest membership category, celebrates physical therapists who have demonstrated unwavering commitment to advancing the profession for more than 15 years.

“Nobody goes into a life of service and advocacy to receive an award or honor,” said Dr. Hyland, reflecting on the honor. “However, when you receive such a special recognition, one that your mentors and professional legends have received, it is an honor.”

A physical therapist with nearly 30 years of experience as a clinician, educator, researcher and advocate, Dr. Hyland’s service to APTA spans decades. In New York, he began as district chair for Hudson Valley, serving three years before being elected president of APTA New York, a role he held for four years. On the national level, he went on to serve four years as one of just nine members of the APTA Board of Directors and three years as vice president of the organization. He currently serves as chief delegate and practice chair of the orthopedic section.

The Catherine Worthingham Fellowship not only recognizes professional excellence but also serves as an inspiration for physical therapists across the country. APTA New York praised Dr. Hyland in a social media message:

“Matthew, you’ve built rigor and depth into every patient interaction, every lecture, every study—setting the bar for what it means to be not just a clinician, but a true scholar-practitioner. Your combination of PT practice and academic excellence is exactly what this award stands for. Here’s to you: for pushing boundaries, demanding better outcomes, and mentoring the next generation of physical therapists. The fellowship is well-deserved.”

With this fellowship, Dr. Hyland joins a select group of leaders whose contributions have shaped and continue to shape the profession of physical therapy.

A new edition of the coursebook “Assessing Essential Skills of Veterinary Technology Students” ensures students are fully prepared to meet industry standards and excel in the field.

Faculty from Mercy’s Veterinary Technology Program played a pivotal role in shaping the fourth edition. Professors Lisa E. Schenkel, Amanda Colón, Sandra Lynn Bertholf ’97, M.S. ’18, Sabrina Timperman and retired faculty member Laurie J. Buell ’95 contributed their expertise to this comprehensive resource, which reviews the skills required by the American Veterinary Medical Association’s Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (AVMA CVTEA).

“What I really value about this book is it’s not just a checklist of skills,” said Dr. Colón. “It gives you a thought process and knowledge behind each skill, in addition to the hands-on techniques. It really puts a big focus on applying these skills in the clinical environment.”

91Թ’s Veterinary Technology Program is a standout choice for students passionate about animal healthcare. As one of the few programs nationwide offering a Bachelor of Science degree in veterinary technology, it combines rigorous academics with extensive clinical training. Students complete two full-semester externships and have opportunities to specialize in areas such as surgical nursing, exotic animal medicine and zoo animal care — preparing them for advanced roles in veterinary medicine. With a 98% Veterinary Technician National Exam pass rate for more than 20 years, the program consistently delivers exceptional results.

What sets Mercy’s program apart are its unique opportunities, including externships at top practices, multi-specialty centers and zoos, as well as an articulation agreement with Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. This agreement reserves two seats per enrollment period for qualified Mercy students, ensuring them a direct path to further their education in veterinary medicine at Ross University. Named one of the Top Ten Best Value Schools, Mercy’s program ensures students are not only well-trained but also positioned for rewarding careers in this growing field.

Bertholf, a licensed veterinary technologist and associate program director, plays a unique role in the curriculum by teaching both the introductory course and the final capstone course. She describes her position as the “bookends” of the program, allowing her to guide students from their first steps to their final milestones. “It’s really amazing to see how far they’ve come and how much they’ve learned,” she said.

A graduate of the program herself, Bertholf said, “It’s exciting to come full circle and teach for the program. I like that I can relate to the students and share my own experiences to help them be successful.”

Colón echoed this sentiment, highlighting the program’s emphasis on real-world experiences. “What sets us apart is the clinical experiences we provide to students,” she said. “They encounter real-life patient situations. When our students graduate, they are ready to enter the field.”

These real-life patient scenarios, encountered during externships, are supported by the coursebook, which emphasizes the reasoning behind each procedure. “It really focuses on applying skills in the clinical environment,” said Colón. “It’s not just about how to do something — it’s about understanding the why. When you grasp the reasoning behind procedures, you’re better equipped to pivot and make adjustments if things don’t go as planned, ensuring patient safety. Our goal is to develop thoughtful, knowledgeable and professional veterinary technicians.”

Colón also emphasized the challenge of bridging classroom knowledge to real-world application. “Students can do quite well on a written exam, but making that bridge from didactic knowledge to a real-life patient in front of them? That’s the challenge,” she said. “Applying that knowledge in the clinical environment is one of the biggest challenges for students today.”

Bertholf agreed, highlighting the coursebook’s purpose. “The goal of this book is for students to apply knowledge to the patient in front of them,” she said. “We want the students to have a very detailed resource.”

This essential study guide is ideal for undergraduate students in AVMA CVTEA-accredited veterinary technology programs and serves as a valuable teaching tool for instructors. It is also a required textbook in 91Թ’s Veterinary Technology Program.

Read the Full Magazine

A decade of community, fitness and giving came full circle on Sunday, April 27th as 91Թ hosted its 10th Annual “Conquer the Trail” race. Organized by the Exercise Science Club, the milestone event returned to its roots with a 5K race along the scenic Old Croton Aqueduct Trail, drawing 70 runners from across the region.

Held under clear skies and spirited cheers, this year’s race featured a classic flat and fast route, with a single hill just before the finish line. The event began and ended on Mercy’s Westchester campus and wound through the historic trail, offering runners a beautiful backdrop and a well-organized challenge.

Awards were presented to the top three male and female finishers. Among the men, Tom Cameron, Mercy’s director of performance marketing, took first place with a time of 20:47, followed by Dmitry Ivanov at 22:33, and Stefan Modrich at 27:08. On the women’s side, Krista Barron led the pack with 20:52, closely followed by Liliana Brandwein (22:00) and Lily Korb (22:14).

“This race started ten years ago thanks to Steven Estremera, a student at the time,” said Amanda Bireline, assistant professor of Health Science. “Steven is still our race director today, and we’re proud that the club and Exercise Science faculty continue to lead this effort annually.”

The race is a hands-on experience for students, particularly from the Exercise Science (EXSC) and Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs. This year, 21 student volunteers supported the event by directing runners, providing encouragement along the route and managing logistics. While most volunteers were from health science programs, students from other departments also pitched in.

In addition to student support, the race attracted five community sponsors and welcomed participants from across Westchester County, Manhattan and the broader local area — a testament to the event’s growing reputation.

This year, the event supported Midnight Run, a volunteer organization dedicated to connecting housed and unhoused individuals through direct outreach. Each year, the club selects a different nonprofit to support. Previous beneficiaries have included the Dobbs Ferry Food Pantry and New York Special Olympics, among others.

“The race has evolved over the years,” Bireline noted. “We’ve tried different formats — a 10K, different routes — but this year, for our 10th anniversary, we went back to the original 5K. Next year, we’re planning something special: a 7.5K race to celebrate Mercy’s 75th anniversary.”

Dr. Nannette Hyland, interim dean of the School of Health and Natural Sciences and professor of Physical Therapy, and Dr. Kathleen Kenney-Riley, professor in the School of Nursing, have been inducted as Distinguished Fellows of the National Academies of Practice (NAP). The honor was conferred during NAP's Annual Induction Banquet and Awards Ceremony in Washington, D.C. this spring. Dr. Hyland and Dr. Kenney-Riley were recognized for their exceptional contributions to their respective fields and to the advancement of interprofessional healthcare.

Dr. Hyland and Dr. Kenney-Riley were honored for their outstanding contributions to physical therapy and nursing, respectively, as well as their commitment to advancing interprofessional healthcare. The title of Distinguished Fellow is a highly selective honor, granted to healthcare professionals who demonstrate exemplary leadership and a sustained commitment to collaborative, team-based care. Inductees are nominated and elected by current NAP Fellows from across a wide range of healthcare disciplines.

“Congratulations to Nan and Kathy,” said Kristin Curry Greenwood, PT, DPT, Ed.D., M.S., FNAP, provost and senior vice president of academic affairs of 91Թ. “This recognition speaks volumes about their dedication to the profession and to the collaborative spirit that defines truly impactful healthcare. They exemplify the best of what we hope to see in academic and clinical leadership.”

Dr. Hyland was inducted into NAP’s Physical Therapy Academy. A member of Mercy’s faculty since 1997, she has served in various leadership roles, including as program director for the Doctor of Physical Therapy program. She is also active in the American Physical Therapy Association and the American Council of Academic Physical Therapy.

Dr. Hyland, inducted into the Physical Therapy Academy, reflected on the honor:
“Becoming a distinguished fellow is a huge honor for me,” said Dr. Hyland. “I have always lived my professional life in an interprofessional manner. I believe that good healthcare comes from a strong team. This continues to be a driving factor in everything that I do. There are many individuals that I have mentored to who are fellows, to stand beside them is humbling. Being a fellow increases my ability to collaborate with other professions within and outside of physical therapy, and I look forward to being part of this association.”

Dr. Kenney-Riley was honored within NAP’s Nursing Academy. She brings more than 25 years of experience in teaching, nursing, and nurse practitioner roles. At Mercy, she teaches in the Family Nurse Practitioner Program and the master’s in nursing education and serves clinically as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in the Emergency Room at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore. She is also a board member of the Speranza Human Compassion Project, a nonprofit that trains health professionals in the mindful care of individuals experiencing intimate partner violence.

“I am deeply honored to be inducted into the National Academies of Practice,” said Dr. Kenney-Riley. “This recognition reflects my commitment to advancing interprofessional practice and education. Through collaboration and teaching, I strive to foster a holistic approach to healthcare that emphasizes teamwork, innovation and excellence. Over my 13 years at 91Թ, I have worked alongside Dr. Nan Hyland to build collaborative experiences across all our healthcare programs. Together, we prepare our students to enter practice with a profound understanding of the importance of collaboration with all disciplines, patients, and families."

NAP is a non-profit organization that advises governmental bodies on the U.S. healthcare system. It champions collaboration across healthcare disciplines to enhance patient care and promote excellence in both interprofessional and preventive care.

Main Content

Allison Murphy, assistant professor of Exercise Science, delivered a standout performance at the World Masters Athletics Indoor Track and Field Championships, held March 23–30 in Gainesville, Florida. The event brought together elite athletes aged 35 and older from over 80 countries, showcasing top-tier talent in age-specific categories.

Representing Team USA in her international debut, Murphy competed in the Women’s 50–54 division. She took center stage in the 60-meter hurdles, where she not only captured gold but also set a championship meet record. Her speed and precision were unmatched, demonstrating both her skill and dedication to the sport.

She continued her winning streak in the 4x200-meter Mixed Relay, running alongside a dynamic team of two men and two women representing Team USA. Together, they clinched another gold medal—and more impressively, set a new world record, making World Masters Athletics history.

Murphy also displayed her abilities in the 60-meter dash, earning a bronze medal and finishing as the top American in the event—a testament to her versatility and elite-level athleticism.

Reflecting on her journey, Murphy opened up about how a shift in her physical activity routine became a turning point in both her physical and mental health:

“I have been active most of my life but became bored with my physical activity routine in recent years,” Murphy shared. “After being sedentary for about a year, my mental health began to suffer. I knew I needed higher-intensity exercise for my well-being, and I needed to do it in community.”

That turning point came in August 2024, when she joined the Central Park Track Club (CPTC), where she found a welcoming and supportive environment—thanks in to high school friends; Derrick Adkins, CPTC Sprinters coach and Lisa Edwards, CPTC teammate.

Returning home with three medals, two golds, a bronze, a championship record, and a world record—Murphy sees her comeback as more than a personal victory:

“What it means for me to have done so well may point to competitive track and field as part of my new lifestyle prescription for becoming the best version of myself,” said Murphy.

Murphy’s achievements are inspiring showing that elite athletic performance and personal transformation can begin at any age.

Her story is a testament to resilience, community, and the enduring power of sport.

Congratulations to Allison Murphy on an outstanding championship performance!

Lindsey Noack, a third-year Doctor of Physical Therapy student, is the 2024 recipient of the Tom Hyland Family Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship was established in 2021, through a generous donation from 91Թ physical therapy faculty members Matthew and Nannette Hyland. The award supports a second- or third-year doctoral student in the physical therapy program who demonstrates leadership and outstanding academic achievement.

“Healthcare and giving back have always been deeply important to me, especially since losing my brother,” Noack said. “Receiving this award reassures me that I’m on the right path and provides a deep sense of relief, knowing that I’m pursuing what I truly love.” Noack continued, “This scholarship is a tremendous help, especially as I balance being a full-time graduate student while also working full-time.”

The scholarship contributes to the growth of physical therapy by recognizing and investing in exceptional students. “The Tom Hyland Family Endowed Scholarship is about helping others, and Lindsey Noack embodies those values,” said Matthew Hyland, PT, PhD, MPA at 91Թ. “She wants to change lives, and by becoming a doctor of physical therapy she will help transform individual’s experiences through movement.” Hyland continued, “She’s also a parent to her wonderful service dog, Maddie. Lindsey is a leader in her cohort and a positive influence among her peers.”

Noack brings extensive hands-on healthcare experience to her doctoral studies. In her brother’s memory, she became a licensed EMT and volunteer firefighter. She responds to medical emergencies throughout her community, developing critical assessment skills and quick decision-making abilities that enhance her physical-therapy education. Her emergency response work has given her valuable experience in patient care under challenging conditions, reinforcing her commitment to helping others during their most vulnerable moments.

Beyond emergency services, Noack works alongside athletic trainers, supporting high school athletes during pre-season evaluations and throughout their competitive seasons. This experience allows her to understand the full spectrum of athletic injury prevention, immediate care, and rehabilitation – key components of physical therapy practice.

Her diverse background in emergency medicine and athletic training provides unique insights into patient care. While EMT work focuses on immediate medical needs, and athletic training emphasizes prevention and performance, physical therapy bridges these approaches by supporting long-term recovery and improved quality of life. This comprehensive understanding of health care delivery shapes Noack's approach to patient care in her doctoral studies.

Noack was honored to receive the award this year. “Being selected for this award means more to me than I can express,” she said. “[It] aligns closely with my mission to inspire resilience in others, “ Noack explained. “I’m passionate about encouraging others to believe in their strength and showing them that no matter the challenges they face, they can still live a full and vibrant life.” She continued, “Every class I attend fills me with excitement, and I leave with even greater passion for the field than when I arrived.”

*Matthew Hyland was not part of the independent committee evaluating potential scholarship recipients.

In recognition of National Physical Therapy Month, 91Թ hosted a community wellness event on October 26, to showcase how physical therapy can enhance quality of life. Organized in partnership with the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) New York, the event featured evaluations and presentations by students and health professionals from the School of Health and Natural Science's Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. Open to community members, faculty, staff and students, the event offered insights into managing chronic pain, recovering from injuries and enhancing mobility.

Mercy students, alongside faculty and licensed physical therapists, conducted health assessments and provided personalized feedback to participants about their physical health. The event also included informative sessions on how physical therapy can significantly improve quality of life, offering practical strategies for incorporating physical therapy into everyday routines.

The event served as an opportunity for participants to learn how to access physical therapy. “Participants did not know they could go directly to a physical therapist without a doctor’s order,” said Nanette W. Hyland, Ph.D., M.S., PT, interim dean of the School of Health and Natural Sciences and physical therapy program director and professor.

Mercy’s Physical Therapy Program also runs a clinic that offers free serves to the Mercy students, faculty and staff, with access available to the broader community. The clinic is open by appointment every Wednesday afternoon and Thursday evening by appointment. For more information and to make an appointment, individuals can contact the clinic at ptprogram@mercy.edu.

“Attendees left with valuable knowledge and resources to improve their health and well-being,” Dr. Hyland noted. “Overall, it was a success, and we hope to do more of these events in the future.”

Mercy’s Physical Therapy students put their skills in motion to help older adults.

Students in the Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) Program give back to the community before they even graduate. True to Mercy’s values, the D.P.T. program emphasizes service. Students must complete community service hours, and certain courses involve projects that help the surrounding community.

In the third and final year of the D.P.T. program, students take a course titled “Maturity and Physical Therapy Practice,” which teaches how to treat conditions that arise as people age. When faculty members began incorporating more handson practice into that course a few years ago, they organized opportunities for students to conduct wellness screenings and present health education sessions to older adults in nearby communities.

In February and March this year, third-year students conducted wellness screenings with older adults in Dobbs Ferry and Yonkers. In each screening, students worked in pairs to conduct an intake interview, took vital signs and assessed the patient’s movement. They then shared their recommendations with a faculty supervisor for approval before explaining them to the patient.

Michael Bulla, D.P.T. ’25, saw the wellness screenings as a welcome opportunity to apply everything he had learned to date. Though his patient in Yonkers did not have any mobility deficits, she did have lingering orthopedic issues and comorbidities, which he said could lead to musculoskeletal issues over time. “This was one of the best experiences I’ve had as a physical therapy student,” he said. “It was particularly helpful to practice active listening, which is the core of what we do as physical therapists.”

In a wellness screening in Dobbs Ferry, Cheri-Ann Parris, D.P.T. ’25, found that her patient’s blood pressure was high and that her balance was impaired. After conferring with the faculty supervisor, she and her classmates referred the patient to a primary care physician and a physical therapist. “I was glad we could put these concerns on her radar,” she said.

In addition to these personalized screenings, D.P.T. students led health education sessions for older adults through the Senior Citizen Nutrition Program in Dobbs Ferry and the Neighborhood Naturally Occurring Retirement Program in Yonkers. In small groups, students presented on yoga, Pilates, strengthening exercises and methods of getting up from the floor safely. The sessions were well-attended with approximately 50 total participants.

Bulla’s group led the session on getting up from the floor safely. They spoke about the prevalence of falls among older adults and demonstrated how to safely get up from the floor. Then, many of the participants — even those who had entered the session using walkers and canes — practiced getting down on the floor and then getting back up safely.

Parris’ group led the session on strengthening exercises to promote bone health. To make the exercises more accessible, they explained the exercises in terms of everyday activities — such as describing dead lifts as picking up heavy grocery bags — and gave the option of using canned soup instead of dumbbells. “We don’t want exercising to feel like a big, daunting activity,” Parris explained. “The main goal is for older adults to be more functional in their daily lives and understand that strength training fosters vitality.”

Participants described the students as well-trained and professional. Patti, a participant at the Senior Citizen Nutrition Program in Dobbs Ferry, said, “Students checked our form and really zeroed in on making sure that we were doing things correctly and that our position was correct.”

Beverly, another participant in Dobbs Ferry, agreed: “They explained everything well and overall did a really nice job. I found the movement, stretching and breathing exercises helpful.”

Ruth Hansen, P.T., D.P.T., Ph.D., associate professor and associate director of Mercy’s Physical Therapy Program, was pleased with the turnout and audience participation. “I’ve never seen a group of older adults participate and interact as much with the students as they did this year,” she said. “I was really proud of the students for leading such strong sessions.”

In addition to enabling students to apply their knowledge and skills, serving community members inspired students like Bulla to continue giving back. “This experience opened my eyes to how much good physical therapists can do in our communities,” he said.

On May 12, Mercy College held the 2023 Faculty Recognition Ceremony to celebrate faculty members receiving promotions, tenure, and awards. Approximately 100 people attended the event on the Dobbs Ferry Campus.

“The work faculty members do is incredibly important. It is intellectually challenging and multifaceted, requiring skills in teaching, research and service — and often administration too,” said Linda Bastone, Ph.D., associate provost for faculty affairs. We can’t do enough to celebrate the faculty and recognize their work. And of course, their impact on students can’t be overstated,” said Bastone.

The first portion of the ceremony featured 40 faculty poster presentations focused on pedagogy and research. The ceremony began with opening remarks by Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Eva Fernández, Ph.D., President Tim Hall and President of the Faculty Senate Matthew Hyland, Ph.D.

“From A to Z, you oversee everything, from gateway programs to experiential education,” Fernández said in compliment to Mercy faculty. “You’re moving forward to mastery and dedicated to the success of our students.”

Hall’s remarks echoed those of Fernández. “I commend you for your work and wish you every success,” he said.

“You all deserve to be appreciated,” said Hyland, in his address to the faculty. “Thank you for your passion for Mercy College, a very special place.”

Then, the dean of each school honored faculty members who received promotions and tenure and those retiring. Finally, various administrators presented awards for faculty excellence, innovation and research.

Peter West, Ph.D., dean of Mercy’s School of Liberal Arts, cited the recognition ceremony as one of his favorite events of the year. “It really is a great time where faculty get to recognize their peers and where they get to be recognized for their full dedication to every aspect of teaching and scholarship.”

Congratulations to the following faculty for achieving important career milestones and recognitions.

Promoted to professor:

Saliha Bava, Ph.D.

Amanda Gunning, Ph.D.

Nannette Hyland, Ph.D.

Kathleen Kenney-Riley, Ed.D.

JungKang Miller, Ph.D.

David Wang, Ph.D.

Promoted to associate professor:

Ben Abelson, Ph.D.

Dana Horton, Ph.D.

Maureen MacLeod, Ph.D.

Astrid Mel, Ph.D.

Chun Zhou, Ph.D.

Awarded tenure:

Matthew Hyland, Ph.D.

Chun Zhou, Ph.D.

Dana Horton, Ph.D.

Honored at retirement:

Diana D’Amico Juettner, J.D.

Teaching Excellence Award:

Deborah Mumford, Ed.D.

Laura Proszak, Ph.D.

Faculty Innovation Award:

Elise Arnold-Levene, Ph.D.

Faculty Fellow:

Haley Collazo, MS, L.IS, M.A.

Online Teacher of the Year:

Laura Policar, Ed.D.

Outstanding Research Award:

Marc Palmieri, MFA, M.A.

William F.
